Reducing residential FOG
Introducing Sprout
In Summer 2024, Schier introduced a new product called Sprout that tackles residential FOG. Homeowners will be quick to adopt it, and it already meets plumbing and pretreatment code (you won’t need to write new code language to allow its use.)
Sprout is the garbage disposal alternative that works silently and without blades or electricity. It collects food scraps and grease for disposal into the kitchen trash can or compost bin and looks good doing it. Sprout prevents expensive plumbing clogs and eliminates disposal repairs, with the bonus feature of reducing the cost of your community’s sewer maintenance.
Building better kitchen habits
Sprout utilizes all that Schier has learned in nearly 25 years of designing commercial grease interceptors, bundled it with homeowner-driven features, and delivered it in a simple and sleek package.
Sprout’s presence in the kitchen sink gently encourages primary disposal of food scraps and grease in the trash or compost and serves as a second line of defense against the remainder that is rinsed off of dishes. This combination of primary disposal plus secondary waste stream “polishing” removes more than 90% of the FOG in households protected by Sprout.
Use cases
Sprout is priced to be affordable, as it is easy to install and eliminates the maintenance associated with disposers. Not only for use in single-family homes, Sprout will be especially effective in offices and high-rise residential buildings and condos where FOG and disposals drive big maintenance costs. In a building with a Sprout in each unit, there is no need for a separate grease-waste drainage system and large outdoor interceptor, representing huge cost savings to developers while protecting the city sewer.
No need for new ordinance language!
Sprout harnesses the power of the free market to solve the huge problem of grease in city sewers. Sewer authorities have always known that about half of their FOG problem comes from residential kitchens, but they have never had a tool to fight it.
Generally speaking, homeowners don’t see and don’t care about grease clogging city sewers, which is why “can the grease” campaigns don’t work. Grease interceptors used in restaurants and commercial kitchens will never be accepted in homes and offices due to odor and maintenance requirements.
Sprout side steps these challenges. Homeowners won’t adopt Sprout because it keeps grease out of sewers, but they will adopt Sprout because it offers them value (lower maintenance costs, protection of their home plumbing, a stylish kitchen differentiator). The protection of city sewers comes free in the bargain.
Certifications, listing & performance
In keeping with our brand standard, all Schier products are third party certified and our certifications are always posted to our website(s). Since there was no existing standard for residential grease interceptors, we partnered with IAPMO to author the very first version. In doing so, we’ve paved the way for other manufacturers to enter the marketplace and provide the free-market competition that will serve to keep our sewers free(er) of residential FOG.
Sprout kitchen sink-waste filters are third party performance tested and listed by IAPMO to the IGC 374-2023 point of use solids and grease collection device standard, and they greatly exceed requirements for solids and grease separation and storage in residential applications. They are compliant to the Uniform Plumbing Code, the National Standard Plumbing Code and the International Plumbing Code.
There’s no need for sewer authorities to go through the time-intensive and litigious process of adding or changing their sewer codes to address residential FOG - all they have to do is inform their sewer users of a new plumbing product category called “kitchen sink-waste filters'' and it’s current incumbent, Sprout.
Pioneers in drain line purity
Sprout is part of the Schier brand family, a trusted name in the restaurant grease management industry, offering the only true lifetime guaranteed grease interceptors on the market. Now we’re putting that expertise to work in American homes, apartments and offices with Sprout.
Sprout is 100% designed, tooled, manufactured and assembled in the U.S. (at our plant in Shawnee, KS). It is patented and carries a UPC listing to IGC 374-2023, the first and only performance standard for residential grease interceptors.
